Update Drupal core

Updating Drupal core regularly brings you the latest bug fixes, feature improvements, and security patches. This page applies a core update through the Drupal CMS admin interface.

Drupal core updated to the latest release through the admin UI. The update UI applies patch and minor updates (for example, 11.3.5 to 11.3.6, or 11.3.6 to 11.4.0). For a major version update, update Drupal core with Composer instead.

Go to Reports → Available updates/admin/reports/updates. The Drupal core section shows your current version and the recommended version, with a status of either Updates available or Security update required.

Back up your site before applying any updates.

  1. Select the Update tab at the top of the Available updates report.
  2. Review the version information, then select the update button, labeled with the target version (for example, Update to 11.3.6).
  3. Drupal CMS verifies the update can be applied, then asks you to confirm that the process can not be reversed. Select Continue.

Applying an update modifies your project’s Composer files. If your site uses Git for version control, commit the changes to composer.json, composer.lock, and any other updated files.

When the update completes, Drupal CMS redirects you back to the Available updates report and displays an Update complete! status message. The Drupal core section now lists the version you installed as the current version.

If the update fails, the errors appear on the page. Resolve the errors, then revert to the backup version of your site and try again.

When you apply updates through the UI, Drupal CMS uses the Composer dependency management tool in the background. You can also use Composer directly to manage updates, which some teams prefer; see updating Drupal core with Composer in the Drupal user guide.
